Abstract

This comparative study undertakes an in-depth examination of the linguistic, cultural, and situational variations of greetings in Yorùbá and French cultures, highlighting the complexities of human communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Through a qualitative analysis of greeting expressions in both cultures, this research reveals the intricate relationships between language, culture, and society, demonstrating how greetings reflect and shape social norms, values, and identities. The study shows that Yorùbá greetings are characterized by their richness, diversity, and contextual sensitivity, while French greetings prioritize formal and informal variations, underscoring the importance of considering linguistic, cultural, and situational factors in understanding greetings and other forms of social interaction. The findings of this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between language, culture, and society, highlighting the need for increased cultural awareness and sensitivity in our increasingly globalized world. By exploring the cultural significance of greetings in Yorùbá and French cultures, this study provides valuable insights into the importance of greetings as a vital aspect of human communication, ultimately enhancing our understanding of the complex dynamics of intercultural communication.
